If you ever get the
opportunity, try to visit the Alhambra palace in Granada.
This is probably the finest remaining example of Moorish
architecture in the world. The building was started
under the reign of the Nasrid dynasty around 1238. The
magical use of light, water and decoration make the Alhambra
an extremely sensuous piece of ancient architecture and
represents the peak of the Moor's achievements in Spain.
Built overlooking the city of Granada, it is now the number
one attraction for visitors from all over the world.
The best time to visit would be between April and June or
September and October. The height of the summer in
this area can be extremely hot. What struck me more
than anything about the Alhambra was the attention to
detail. The stone fretwork, the way the water and the
plants interact. The beautiful courtyards with pools and
fountains. The garden areas are an oasis of colour and
perfume. To get the most out of your visit you need at least
half a day. Guided tours are running all the time and
are essential if you want to learn all about the
history of the Alhambra. When my wife and I went, we
just made our own way around, soaking in the atmosphere.
What an experience it must have been to sit in one of these
secluded courtyards at the height of the Moorish dynasty,
before the age of tourism with the sound of gurgling water,
birds singing and the scent of jasmine filling the air.
