RONDA
Perched high up in
the hills above the Costa del Sol, Ronda is a pretty, sophisticated
town with some interesting history. The first bullring in
Spain was built in Ronda in 1572. It was initially constructed
as a centre for horse training and not primarily intended as a
place to fight bulls. Bulls were introduced to train the
riders in the art of evasion. This proved to be an exciting
spectator sport which eventually led to the first established
bullfights in the late 18th century. The bullring still stands
and is still in use. Another of the town's main attractions is
the spectacular gorge which is spanned by an 18th century arched
bridge.
