GUADIX
Ever fancied staying in a cave house in Spain? Guadix near
Granada in Andalucia is home to a number of cave houses and even a
cave hotel. The Southern area of Guadix is known as Barrio
Troglodyte or cave district. Guadix itself is a typical
Spanish town with bars, shops and restaurants but the main point of
interest are the cave houses. Inside, the temperature remains
constant throughout the year, so the inhabitants stay warm in the
winter and cool in the summer. When you enter the cave
district you are met with a surreal landscape of hills dotted with
whitewashed houses and protruding tall white chimneys.
There is a small pottery shop/museum in Guadix which has clay models
of the cave houses.
