CORDOBA
One of the most
important cities in Spain, Cordoba is home to many places of
historical significance. The Romans founded Cordoba in 206BC it was
built on the river Guadalquivir and became an important centre for
the export of Spanish olives wine and wheat back to Rome. This
area of Andalucia is the main olive growing region in Spain.
Many Roman remains are still intact, one of the most impressive is
the bridge over the Guadalquivir which is the main
entrance to the city. The streets of Cordoba are lined with
lime trees which bear fruit, it is unusual in Spain to see so many
limes in a city.
Cordoba is in a remote area. Between Granada and Cordoba, there is
nothing only acres of olive trees. Cordoba is one of the hottest
cities in Spain with temperatures well in excess of 40c on some
days. The best time to visit would be around May or June when
the heat is bearable. As well as Roman, Cordoba has fantastic
Moorish buildings including the famous Mezquita a perfectly
preserved mosque. This area of Spain was one of the last
bastions of the Moors. At that time,Cordoba was the ancient
capital of Andalucia or as it was known then, El Andalus.

THE ROMAN BRIDE
ACROSS THE RIVER
Guadalquivir
When Cordoba was recaptured from the Moors in the 14th century the
Christians decided to build a cathedral within the walls of the
mosque. The two now stand side by side, a testimony to the
skills of these early craftsmen. Cordoba's maze of narrow
streets run parallel to the river and intersect each other. It
wouldn't be difficult to get lost in this area. Cordoba was home to
an important Jewish community which was persecuted by the Moors in
the 15th century. This area remains well preserved and
probably looks more or less as it was in those times.

Another well preserved historical monument is the Palace of the
Christian kings or Alcazar. This building was actually
constructed by the Moors in the 14th century and stands on much
older Roman remains. If you find yourself in Cordoba don't
miss out on a tour around the palace and its gardens, you get a real
sense of history here. Click below for webcam in Cordoba.
