GIBRALTER
Gibraltar lies at the Southernmost end of the Costa del Sol.
Because of its strategic importance at the mouth of the Mediterranean,
Gibraltar has had a chequered history. In 1711 the rock was
handed over to Great Britain forever, at the treaty of Utrecht.
Since then it has seen several disputes over its status, with
occasional border blockades by the Spanish authorities.
Gibraltar is home to some 30,000 English speaking nationals, many of
whom can trace their origins back to the earliest days of the rock's
occupation. This number is swelled by thousands every year as
hoards of tourists cross the border in search of duty free goods.
The barbary apes which inhabit the rock are now a major tourist
attraction. It is said that when the apes leave, Gibralter will
be transferred back to Spain. Gibralter airport is located about two
kilometers from the town centre and barriers are raised each time a
plane lands to prevent anybody straying onto the runway. It is
better to hire a car just over the border in La Linea. Click
