The Town
|
Almuńécar, an all year
round holiday destination which enjoys an average of 320
days’ sunshine a year, is a lively resort-cum-working
town on the Costa Tropical, a coastal stretch that is
situated between Malaga and Almeria. The town is very
Spanish and retains a Moorish atmosphere in its
extensive old quarter, a maze of cobbled streets with
many shops, tapas bars, cafés and restaurants, which
form the heart of the town. There are a number of
attractive beaches and bays at Almuńécar and its
surrounding districts and superb sea front promenades
provide easy, pleasant strolling in reach of both beach
and town, with plenty of opportunities to stop for
refreshments on the way.
The town was founded by the Phoenicians more than 3,000
years ago and was later occupied by the Romans and
subsequently by the Moors. Roman remains include an
aqueduct and the foundations of a fort, which is now the
Castle (Castillo de San Miguel) built by the Moors
during the reign of Carlos V.
There are numerous bus services from Almuńécar to local
destinations along the coast and also regular services
to Almeria, Malaga and Granada.
