Valencia is the capital city of the Valencian
community. It is one of Spain's largest cities with a population of
approx 790,000. Valencia has a long pre Roman history. The
origin of the Valencian community dates back to the year when it was
captured by King James 1. Successive invaders have left many
historical monuments, many of which are still in a good state of
preservation.
The impression of Valencia nowadays, is of a bustling
modern city housed within a framework of historic
buildings. Valencia has a modern underground network and most of the
top retail outlets have branches here. Valencia won the rights to
host the prestigious 32nd 2007 Americas cup. This was the first time
the event had been hosted in a European country and large
investments were made, with property prices booming. The Valencian authorities estimate that over 10 million visitors passed
through the city during the competition. The
Americas cup was the launch pad for huge investment projects along the costa azahar.

Valencia is famous for its Fallas festivals. Huge
papier mache models characterising politicians, celebrities etc are set on
fire all over the city. These models can take over a year to make and
are usually on display for about a week prior to the lighting. A
must see in Valencia is the large market hall selling every imaginable
variety of seafood. Valencia is where the national dish Paella originated. Paella is a mixture of seafood
and chicken or pork which uses the rice of the area.
