The town of
Torrevieja started life in the 18th century as a fishing village.
The word Torrevieja is actually two words torre, meaning tower and
vieja meaning old. So Torrevieja means "old tower".
The name originated from one of the old lookout posts which dot
the coastline and around which the town was built. Prior to
tourism the town's income was generated by fishing and salt
production. Salt was exported all over the world from
Torrevieja after large salt deposits were discovered in the area's
lagoons. The two largest lagoons are called La Mata and
Torrevieja. Salt is still a major part of Torrevieja's industry
but has now been overtaken by tourism. On the 21st
March 1829, Torrevieja was hit by a large earthquake which
devastated the town and substantially reduced the population.
The rebuilding process began soon after. The property
explosion we see today, started in the late sixties and is still
continuing. Torrevieja has since grown from a relatively
small town into a huge sprawling area, primarily because its
low house prices have made it popular with second home
owners from throughout Europe. Torrevieja can now be split
into distinct areas like Villamartin, Quesada, La Zenia etc
. Our website has apartments and villas available to
rent direct from the owners in the Torrevieja area.
