Off the beaten track
lies the mountain village of Jijona (pop 7,600). Jijona has a
history dating back to pre Roman after the Roman occupation it was
invaded by the Moors until it was liberated in 1258 during the
Christian re conquest of Spain. The remains of a Moorish castle
" La Torre Grossa" are still intact. Because of its mountainous
location , there are fantastic views across to the coast. At
Christmas in most of Spain, a nougaty chewy bar made from
honey and almonds is offered as a treat much as Turkish delight is in
the u.k. This sweet treat is known as Turron and Jijona is where
it comes from. There is even a museum dedicated to the production of
Turron. I would recommend Jijona, only as part of a wider trip around
the area which could take in some other villages and not as a specific
destination. |
