ELCHE
Elche is the Palm
tree capital of the costa blanca. Palm trees are
grown commercially and thrive in the local
conditions. Elche is about 15kms south of
Alicante, it is a large town which has a mostly
industrial base but also pleasant park areas.
Especially nice is the famous priests garden, a
secluded area of tranquility with an amazing variety
of flowers and trees. A famous stone head "the
lady of Elche" was discovered in Elche in the
19th century. The head is thought to date from
around the fourth century b.c. Elche is well
worth a visit, the old part has some nice historical
buildings and the parks are a good place to relax.
