Calpe is a large
resort, north of Benidorm, covering approx 5kms of coast. The
resort spreads from the main town at the top end to the fishing
port at the other. There is also another beach and
promenade beyond the harbour area. Calpe also has many villas
situated on the other side of the main N332 road so if we include
these as part of Calpe, It is an extremely large resort. There
are tower blocks of mostly holiday apartments lining the promenade
from top to bottom. Calpe dates back to before Roman times and
there are quite a few very well preserved Roman remains along
the main promenade (the Paseo Maritimo). The salt lakes which
are now a nature reserve, were once used by the Romans in the process
of salting fish. Calpe's main feature is the Penyal d'Ifach a
huge rock, which at over 300mtrs in height dominates the skyline.
The rock has a fairly new walkway around the base which has very well
maintained gardens. There are often mountain climbers dangling
precariously from ropes high up on rocky outcrops.Another feature of
Calpe well worth visiting, is the harbour area. Here you
can run the gauntlet of the fish restaurant staff. There are
many fish restaurants surrounding the harbour and every lunchtime each
one has fantastic displays of seafood on ice. As you stroll
past, the staff will try to tempt you into the restaurant with a glass
of Sangria or a seafood morsel.

One of the oldest
seafood restaurants in Calpe, is the bar Baydal (or Barby doll as we
call it), the bar Baydal relies not on displays but on it's reputation
as one of the best seafood restaurants in the area. Don't go to
the harbour area without sampling the sole menuire in the bar Baydal .
