Alicante was known
by the Romans, as Lucentum or the "city of light" and the description
is just as accurate today. Alicante seems to radiate brightness.
Alicante is the capital of the Southern part of the Valencian
community. It has a recently renovated harbour area which is
worth a visit in its own right. At night the area is used by
Alicanteans for strolling. The city of Alicante has a large
population of over three million people. This is only apparent
at night when the bars and restaurants are thronged with people.
A good time to visit Alicante is during one of the many festivals
throughout the year. The atmosphere especially in the evenings
is truly magical.Opposite the large promenade is the tree lined sea
front area. There are large paved areas shaded by towering palm
trees with bars serving cooling drinks.
Alicante has many
day trippers bussed in from local resorts and the large variety of
shops bars and restaurants, combined with the proximity of the airport
and the availability of cheap flights Alicante has become a new
location for people looking for a city break.
Alicante is now
quite cosmopolitan with the recent influx of North Africans,
South Americans and Eastern Europeans. If like me you like looking at
seafood check out the fish market.
